GRAND OLE OPRY OWNER PLANS ARIZONA'S BIGGEST HOTEL IN MESA

Mesa could soon be home to Arizona's biggest hotel.

The owner of Nashville's Grand Ole Opry and Gaylord Opryland, the destination resort hotel next door to the legendary home of country music, plans to build a new version of its signature hotel brand in Mesa, the company announced today amidst a who's who of East Valley leaders at the Mesa Arts Center.

Nashville, Tenn.-based Gaylord Entertainment will buy 100 acres of the 3,200-acre General Motors Proving Ground in southeast Mesa from real estate developer DMB Associates to develop its fifth Gaylord resort and conference center project.

NEW DEVELOPMENT WINGS VALET ELEVATES PHOENIX-MESA GATEWAY AIRPORT

Mesa envisioned attracting good-paying jobs when the city and other members of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority invested $20 million to $30 million in the former Air Force base over the past decade.

Now, the vision is coming true, as Hawker Beechcraft becomes the fourth major aviation company to announce plans to build a business-jet maintenance facility at the airport. It joins fellow heavyweights Cessna, Embraer and Crown Air.

"It's one of those rare occasions in my lifetime when a government program exceeds expectations," said Aaron Wolf, president of Fleming West Building Co., which built the hangar Beechcraft is purchasing. "It's got to be one of the crown jewels, from a military facility paid for by the taxpayers to a private-public partnership."

Beechcraft facility lands at Gateway

Development marches on at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA) in Phoenix. A new project with the unique name of Wings Valet promises to bring 125,000 square feet of newly built hangar space to aviators in dire need of more space.

A partnership with some deep roots in the aviation business originated the project. Phil Hengsteler, Andy Russell and Max Anhoury were formerly behind ARM Aerospace, a company whose primary product is the Aero-Lift hangar storage solution. Impressed by the product's usefulness and versatility, longtime investor Anhoury started investigating more opportunities in the aviation field and formed HDH Systems LLC, as the umbrella under which to build high-density hangar projects.

"Because we were talking to airports all over the country about our aircraft lifts, we started looking at development opportunities to build hangars that would accommodate Aero-Lifts," Anhoury said. "Being firmly in the aviation industry, we felt we had a pretty good idea what was going to happen at specific airports. Because this one is close to home, it made sense to do a land lease at Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport."

Formerly known as Williams Gateway Airport and once home to Williams Air Force Base, the airport has become a major reliever airport for the region and is poised to become a major transportation and business hub. A recently completed beltway, Loop 202, is bringing the city's eastern suburbs more closely into the traffic flow of Phoenix. The city of Phoenix joined a $5 million partnership between Sky Harbor Airport and Phoenix-Mesa Gateway to attract airline traffic to the east side of the Phoenix area.

PLANS FOR GATEWAY URBAN CENTER AIM HIGH

Not that long ago, a vast swath of land sat far from the buzz of a growing Valley.

It was the home of Williams Air Force Base, which trained generations of airmen for the nation's wars. And the home of the General Motors Desert Proving Ground, where top-secret new cars went through their paces away from prying eyes. And the home, really, of not much else.

But in just a few years, if Valley planners and visionaries are right, this corner of southeast Mesa could be home to a brand-new city.

SMALL PHOENIX-AREA AIRPORT POISED TO GROW

MESA — Karen Buckner could have flown to Las Vegas out of Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport. But when a cousin told her about Williams Gateway Airport, much closer to her Gilbert home, it was an easy choice.

"There's way less traffic; it's small and convenient," Buckner said.

It's also quiet, and security is a breeze, she said. But there's just one airline. Las Vegas-based Vision Airlines offers two flights a week to North Las Vegas, one on Friday and another on Sunday.
